MRV is the leader of Free Space Optics (FSO or Optical Wireless) with the TereScope® product line, an optical wireless system for data, voice and video transmission system. With over 8000 links deployed worldwide, MRV has more experience installing and servicing this equipment than any other Optical Wireless vendor. The MRV TereScope® systems provide the most comprehensive FSO wireless solutions, ranging from short to long distances and narrow to ultra-high bandwidth.
What is FSO? Free-Space Optics (also known as “FSO”, “Wireless Optics” or “Optical Wireless”) is an optical data, voice and video transmission system. Like fiber optic cable, wireless optics communication systems use laser light to transmit a digital signal between two transceivers. However, unlike fiber, the laser like is transtmited through the air (free-space) instead of through a glass strand. In order for the digital signal to be transmitted and received, there must be clear line of site between each wireless optics unit. In other words, there should be no obstructions such as trees or buildings between the transceiver units.

The TereScope™ family of Free-Space Optics (FSO) products provides low-cost, high-speed wireless connectivity for a variety of last-mile applications. Operating at data rates of 1.5 Mbps to 10 Gigabit speeds, TereScope systems are deployable in one day, without requiring right-of-way or government permits for installation, providing communication links in hours instead of weeks or months.

Maximum distances quoted in the table above are typical values based on average UK/North European weather conditions. FSO link distances can be extended significantly if installed in conjunction with an RF link; certain MRV FSO models can be equipped with “Fusion”, a system that will seamlessly switch between the two wireless technologies to provide the highest uptime available.
The TS700 series provides high speed Free Space optics (FSO) connectivity for a variety of first mile applications. Operating at full wire speed data rates of 1 Mbps to 1.25 Gbps, the TS700 series is rapidly deployable, without requiring right-of-way or government permits for installation, providing you with communication links in hours instead of weeks or months.
The TS700 is a high quality product specially designed for short distance connections reaching distances of up to 400 m at the best price performance ratio possible.
The TS800/155 is a high quality product designed for the medium range connections
reaching distances of up to around 600m, but can be extended significantly further when combining with a radio link, if using the optional built in “fusion” failover system
The TS800/155 supports most of the prevalent protocols in the 34-155 Mbps range.
Features
- Data rate between 1-155 Mbps
- POE option
- SNMP - Optional
- FUSION option - Failover to radio backup
The carrier class TereScope® 2000 operates at data rates of 2 Mbps to 1.25 Gbps. TereScope 2000 systems are used for medium distances and support a wide variety of protocols at full duplex at wire-speed. The more popular protocols are supported, but the power supplies and interfaces are not modular (unlike the TS4000 and TS5000), and a more compact aiming head is used, to reduce system cost. This balance of a basic set of features with multiple transmitters and a large aperture receiver in the large form factor offers a lower cost solution while still maintaining the increased robustness of the large form-factor links.
TereScope® 2000 systems, like all TereScope units, are deployable within a matter of hours. The TS2000 has two transmitters and an 8” RX lens - these features almost eliminate any scintillation influence and enhance the transceiver’s reliability.
The carrier class TereScope® 4000 operates at data rates of 1 Mbps to 155 Mbps, TereScope 4000 systems are used for medium to long distances and support a wide variety of protocols at full duplex at wire-speed.
Features
- Accommodates 1 to 155 Mbps networks
- Built-in SNMP management (in TS4000/155 and TS4000/100 models)
- FUSION option – Fail-over to radio backup
- Modular network connectivity (in TS4000/155)
- Modular Power Supply (optional redundant power supply)
The carrier class TereScope® 5000 provides long distance high-speed Free Space Optics (FSO) connectivity. Operating at data rates of 1 Mbps to 1 Gigabit, TereScope® 5000 systems are deployable rapidly, providing long distances FSO optical wireless connectivity.
TereScope® 5000 uses multiple transmit aperture technology (3 transmitters) to ensure high performance in adverse weather conditions. The receiver of the long-range TereScope® 5000 has an 8” diameter to overcome scintillation and other atmospheric noises in hot or cold weather.
Features
- Accommodates 1 Mbps to 1.5 Gbps
- SNMP management Built-in
- FUSION option – Fail-over to radio backup
- Modular network connectivity (interface)
- Modular Power Supply (optional redundant power supply)
The TS5000/100-F is designed specifically for 100BaseTX applications, and features a copper RJ45 interface, for both the main interface and redundant FUSION output. For this model the Fusion feature is standard. This model in the low voltage version (V3) has a High Power over Ethernet (PoE, 30W) configuration. The TS5000 series also has a modular interface, i.e. the transceiver can be easily modified in the field from multimode to singlemode or from 850 mm to 1300 mm. (available in TS5000/155, TS5000/155-F, TS5000/G and TS5000/G-F models). An additional advantage of the transceiver modularity is the possibility to add the Fusion option in the field in case this option has not been previously purchased.
TereScope® TS-10GE, the industry’s first wireless 10-Gigabit Ethernet system. TereScope TS-10GE has a range of up to 850 meters in clear weather. It connects to the LAN using a XFP interface with physical-layer and wavelength flexibility and distances up to 10 kilometers.
